Opera in two acts by Benjamin Britten, Op. 37 Libretto based on Andrè Obey's play "Le Viol de Lucrèce" by Ronald Duncan
Lucretia - a disgraced woman takes her fate in hand and changes the political structure of an entire society. The ancient history of the Roman citizen touches on central questions of moral conduct and shows that the attitude of an individual has consequences for the whole community. The centuries-old material appears highly topical and gains an emotionally touching approach in Benjamin Britten's musical language.
